ナイジェリア出身のイボ人の小説家。イボ人の伝統的な社会と植民地時代後のキリスト教世界の狭間で育つ。イバダン大学で、英語、ラテン語、歴史、神学を学び、卒業後は、ナイジェリア放送協会に勤務。植民地支配の問題を描いた『崩れゆく絆』がロンドンで出版されると、アフリカ諸国独立の機運のなか世界で激賞を受け、50以上の言語に翻訳されて、発行部数は一千万部以上に上った。また、映画『地獄の黙示録』の原作であるジョゼフ・コンラッドの小説『闇の奥』に差別意識を見て批判を加え、世界的な議論を呼んだ。「アフリカ文学の父」とも呼ばれるが、本人はそれに否定的であった。著作は他に『神の矢』『もはや安楽なし』『サバンナのアリ塚』等がある。
