スイスの神学者。バーゼルで牧師の子として生まれる。無名の牧師時代に著した『ローマ書』によって脚光を浴び、弁証法神学運動の中心的存在となった。ドイツの大学から招聘され教鞭を執っていたが、ヒトラーへの忠誠宣誓を拒否したため解職。以後スイスに帰国し、ヒトラーに抵抗する教会闘争の思想的支柱となった。20世紀の神学界に最も大きな影響を与えたとされる。著作は他に、『教義学網要』『教会教義学』『死人の復活』『ピリピ書注解』『キリスト教の教理』『福音主義神学入門』『東と西との間にある教会』『信仰告白』『福音と律法』『啓示・教会・神学』等がある。
