ユダヤ人のジャーナリスト、小説家、政治活動家、哲学者。ソ連の全体主義を批判した『真昼の暗黒』、イギリスの新聞の特派員としてスペインに潜入時に捕虜になり抑留された経験をもとにした『スペインの遺書』等、多くの政治小説を書いた。また『機械の中の幽霊』では、部分でありながら全体としての構造・機能・性質を持つものについての単位「ホロン（全体子）」を提唱。パーキンソン病と白血病を理由に、イギリス安楽死協会会長として妻とともに自ら安楽死を実践して死去。著書は他に『ユダヤ人とは誰か』『ケストラー自伝・目に見えぬ文字』『ホロン革命』『偶然の本質』『創造活動の理論 芸術の源泉と科学の発見』等。
