ビクトリア朝時代の主要なイギリスの美術評論家であり、水彩画家、哲学者、社会思想家、篤志家。オックスフォード大学教授。美術評論を著す傍ら、次第に社会的・政治的な問題に焦点を当てるようになり、社会主義を奉じつつ慈善事業を為し、また文化財の保護運動の活動等も行った。著作は『近代画家論』『建築の七燈』『ゴシックの本質』『ヴェニスの石』『建築の七燈』『胡麻と百合』『芸術経済論』『アミアンの聖書』『この後の者にも』『空の女皇』等。
